Thin or happy?
Well…I should probably start by saying that my asking this question is not suggesting you can’t have both.
BUT I do believe that we as people have this idea in our heads that:
THIN = Happy
And friend, that’s simply not true. I know plenty of thin people who aren’t happy. And I know plenty of not-so-thin people who ARE TRULY GENUINELY honest to goodness happy.
So I’ve been pondering…WHEN IN THE WORLD did we start thinking that in order to be happy you HAD to be thin? Let’s be real. The only reason we ever want anything is because of what we believe that thing will bring us. We believe that having that thing will make us feel better. Or bring us something we don’t have. And at some point in time, we started believing that thin people are happy. And so we think to be happy we must be thin…so we strive to be thin. We tell ourselves we MUST be thin. We won’t let ourselves be happy until we are thin.
The photos in the post – this session took over a year to happen. And can I be honest? MOST of it was because of me. Yes, we had to reschedule a few times due to rain but mostly it was because I was all in my head about looking good in a bathing suit. I wanted to have abs. I wanted to be this ridiculous picture of what I thought a woman in a bathing suit should look like.
And the day of I wasn’t ready. Life was happening. Stress. Travel. LIVING! My eating was all over the place, I was nervous. But I just couldn’t postpone anymore. And can I tell you,…in the time of just playing and having fun with the three people in the world I love most…I didn’t care. We just enjoyed one another. We ran and skipped and laughed and hugged and kissed.
It was amazing.
I have personally seen and experienced that being happy, joyful, sad, angry, anxious, WHATEVER emotion I may be having is all about how I frame my thoughts. For example, I think the thought “I gained ten pounds.” This is a fact. It IS the circumstance at hand.
BUT…did you know that I get to choose how I feel about that?
I can either go negative and beat myself up over it: Ridicule. I can cry over that extra weight. I can starve myself to try to lose weight. I can separate myself from my friends and family because I’m ashamed.
I can choose to be positive: I can thank my body for being healthy and for functioning as it should. I can instead of mourning those ten pounds focus my attention on other parts of my body I love – like the dimples on my cheeks or the muscles on my arms. I can use those ten pounds as motivation to make the best food choices for me as possible. I can choose to smile at my gains in the gym.
And if that’s true (and it is) – If what we think determines how we feel – would you agree with me that you can create whatever feelings YOU WANT – right now by just changing your thoughts?
Seriously! Think happy thoughts = YOU WILL BE HAPPY!
If you consistently CHOOSE to think about positive joyful things – if you consistently love yourself – if you tell yourself things that build up instead of tear down – if you surround yourself with people who do the same…WATCH! I promise you are gonna find yourself one surprisingly happy person.
No matter what you look like. 🥰 THINK (not thin) happy. Be happy. 👌🏾
